This week the team at Families First Funeral Services would like to dispel the myths and misconceptions about why people choose Direct or No Service Cremations. We’ve found that people mistakenly believe families choose No Service or Direct Cremations because (in no particular order) Families can’t afford the cost of a more traditional funeral Those left behind didn’t particularly hold the deceased in high regard Friends or family don’t believe anyone would attend a traditional service The deceased had severed all ties with friends and family The deceased was not religious and hence the family have no choice but to hold a Direct Cremation The deceased was a pauper The reality is that families who choose a No Service or Direct Cremation do so because (in order of most common) they: Generally believe that the most appropriate way to celebrate the life that was is to hold a unique service that is symbolic of the person who has passed. Such as having a private wake at home with a small gathering of friends and family or simply scattering the ashes at a sacred place, etc. Are following the wishes of the deceased who was adamant that when they passed they didn’t want a traditional service. Rather they wanted a Direct Cremation and would rather friends and family simply remember them in their own special way Are pragmatic and simply can’t justify the exorbitant fees some Funeral Directors charge for traditional services.
In conclusion, if you’re considering holding a Direct / No Service Cremation you shouldn’t feel guilty about being pragmatic, you shouldn’t feel guilty about upholding the wishes of the person who has passed and you shouldn’t feel guilty about saving money.
Most importantly, you shouldn’t feel bound by how society considers a funeral should be conducted. Celebrate the life of your loved one in a manner that best suits you, your friends and family.
